Question

Help answer this question below.

Will English have to be modified to make "your" and "you're" into one word because so many of today's ill-educated can't distinguish which to use and try to make them interchangeable?

I certainly hope not. People confuse "exasperate" and "exacerbate" all the time...some people can't even pronounce nuclear correctly. We don't need to simplify the language just because some are not properly crossing all the t's and dotting all the i's. The point of language is communication, isn't it? So if you can understand what someone is trying to communicate why get your shorts all tied up in a knot? I think people do the best they can at whatever they attempt and we shouldn't let the small stuff get in the way of talking to each other! :) ((hugs))

    • Many of those who misuse your/you're do so out of willful stupidity. They become incensed if anyone points our the usage error.

    • It's difficult for me to believe that someone would go out of his/her way to say/do something that is incorrect if he/she knows what is proper. I guess either you hang out with a different crowd than I do sweetie or I am totally oblivious to what is going on! :)

    • I've run into it here. Numerous posters became outraged at being corrected.

    • Ah Jim...in rereading my answers/comments I often find that I've not spelled something correctly...not because I'm ignorant of the proper spelling but rather because my fingers can't keep up with my brain and I leave letters out or will write "you're" instead of "your". Things like that never bother me and I would not ever correct someone unless asked to do so. Whatever the reason for the improper spelling/grammar/syntax, it doesn't bother me at all. As long as I can understand what the person is saying I leave it alone. Otherwise I will ask for a clarification or restatement and no one ever gets angry at that. Happy Monday to you! :) I often have to edit my work because of such inadvertent errors.
