Dream psychology is actually very interesting, I have studied quite a bit about Rapid Eye Movement sleep - and if the answer to your question is interesting... you should too! Or not.

Dreams can vary in length depending on how long we have slept. When we first go to sleep it takes us about an hour to have our first dream, which lasts about 15 minutes on the average. From then on we have a dream about every hour with the time shortening the more sleep we have. By the end of the night, some of our dreams can last nearly 45 minutes or more.

How does science learn things like this?

Neuro-scanning devices and methods, such as electroencephalograms can be used to determine changes in brain frequencey, function, and operation. The way the brain changes from regular sleep to dream-sleep can clearly be seen during one of such scans.

Dream Moods is a very cool site that offers help in interpreting your dreams... go check it out.

    • Dreams could happen after a few minutes if you haven't gotten enough sleep, so you go into REM sleep quicker. Also dreams can happen in non-REM sleep too, although I think most of the dreams we remember happen in REM sleep.

    • Another interesting method of studying dreams takes advantage of the fact that the eyes can move in REM sleep, so lucid dreamers can send signals by moving their eyes in a certain pattern. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Laberge
