Rarely are natural gas pipes cleaned. The residue in the pipe is a combination of heavy hydrocarbons and sulfur conpounds that tar out over the life of the pipe. There is also moisture which in that environment can cause rust/scale to form from the pipe corrsion. So if the scaling is heavy it is assumed the pipe is corroded and the pipe is generally replaced verses cleaned. But unless the pipe is 30 years or older there should be no reason unless you are using your own natural gas supply system. Natural gas suppliers are required to maintain gas quality at a pretty tight specification especially for home commercial use.
