Many Americans in both rural and urban areas of the nation did support the efforts of the New Deal during the Great Depression, even though most of the New Deal measures did not get us out of the depression. FDR’s Fireside Chats provided confidence and reassurance to many. Rural electrification, Social Security, insurance of bank accounts, protection for labor unions, and federal controls over the economy gave many a sense of security in the future and in the government. While there were some radical movements during the Great Depression, the faith Americans had in their system of government did not falter. The American people today seem to have more faith in the government to guide us through a depression. With government stimulus, that not all like, and a faith that the economic system will not collapse completely, most seem to believe we will get through the current economic crisis. To those of us unemployed, it may seem like it is taking too long, but there are signs of improvement. Notice also, no attempts at any radical measures or groups that were evident during the Great Depression.
