Edgar Bergen created these characters...made them come to life. What came through the radio was a delightful world of interesting "people" he created. I have seen ventriloquists who could swallow a glass of water and "talk" while doing so...I saw ventriloquists whose dummies talked a blue streak and their lips never twitched, moved, shimmied or anything. They were boring. They could perform a "trick" but they could not create a whole world as Edgar Bergen could. To answer your question then...yes, it took a great deal of skill to do what he did. Not moving your lips is the least of it. :)

    • 1,000% correct. No one would have listened to the radio show if Bergen hadn't created such vivid and realistic characters.
Even now it's hard to believe that Charlie McCarthy wasn't a real person -- or was he?
BTW, if you live within listening range of radio station CHML in Toronto (900 on the AM dial) you'll be able to hear some of the Bergen-McCarthy shows, and many other old radio programs. Their schedule is on 900chml.com.

    • If you click on this link, you can "Listen Live" to that Hamilton, Ontario radio station:
      .
      http://corusmedia.media.streamtheworld.com/player/Player.htm?id=chmlam&city=Hamilton,Ontario&bdskey=&url=http://www.900chml.com&platform=EMMISAM&active=true
      .
I've got it bookmarked, Basil, and you can bet that I'll be tuning in on a regular basis. When I was a kid living in Iowa, I was able, on occasion, to tune in CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, via what is known as "skip," where radio signals bounce off the troposphere in such a way that folks can hear the station from thousands of miles away.
      .
Today, almost any radio station on Earth can be heard via the Internet. It's wonderful! People living far away from their hometowns can listen to their hometown radio stations, live, whenever they wish.
      .
That cuts down dramatically, on cases of "homesickness."

    • Mensan is right, it's Hamilton, not Toronto. And if I'm ever unable to listen on the radio I'll remember that I can receive it on the Internet.
