I used Compac to move all of my belongings from NJ to San Francisco. THIS COMPANY IS SHADY! Yes, they offer you a lower estimate than any other company out there, but don't put too much stock in the price they quote you... I have read similar complaints about Compac online (unfortunately, after the fact).

I was quoted the cost of $900 for an estimated 2,000 lbs. and was guaranteed they do not charge any additional fees. I was floored by how much cheaper it was than other companies that also estimated we had 2,000 lbs. But after they picked up everything and weighed it, they told me everything weighed over 3,000 and was charged for the additional weight. They also attempted to charge me $200 for crating loose items. I had NO loose items. I had moved to CA before sending for my belongings, so everything was already boxed and ready to go. When I asked what needed to be crated, he started stumbling over his words about loose glasses or something. I told him it was impossible, so he decided to make me a "deal" by only charging me $100 since he could not figure out what was crated.

I was told the remainder of the payment after deposit was due when I received the shipment. The next thing I knew, I noticed a $500 charge to my bank account. I called to inquire about it and was told I would get a call back b/c they weren't sure. I never heard back from them, not even to tell me if the truck had left NJ or not. I had to call back a few days later to figure things out. Also, when I finally spoke to the driver, he had no record of me already paying $500. It took him a couple of days to sort out with the office how much I actually still owed.

When my belongings finally arrived, I found out that the items they charged me $100 to "crate" were my couch cushions! They took them out of the bags I had them in and wrapped them with cardboard. It even says in their website that soft items can be placed in bags. What a rip-off...

Then, they tried to charge me a $75 fee for needing to use my building's elevator. An elevator fee... seriously? I could understand charging a fee for a walk-up, but NOT an elevator... I got them to waive this fee.

Next, they could not fit their giant truck in the loading dock. They had to park on the street next to the loading dock and walk through it to the elevator (approx. 20 ft.). They then charged me a hefty fee for that as well! So much for their guaranteed "no additional fees"...

After unpacking, I noticed I was missing a container or two. I called Compac and asked if anything was undelivered or reported. I was told it would get looked into and I would hear back from them. Three weeks and a follow-up email later, and NOTHING.

I just read a similar complaint on ripoffreport.com - dramatic difference in shipment weight from what was estimated and missing boxes. They have also been mentioned in movingscam.com.
