For Linux systems, _THE_ indispensable media playing tool has to be VideoLAN - www.videolan.org is its homepage. It's a great player, will run on Windows (thanks to an XWindows port), Linux, just about everything. AND it has its own filters and codecs for many, many formats, so you don't have to worry about incompatibilites. You can also add extra functionality by adding modules.

It's a great player, and written for Linux. :)

    • I've been interested in vlc (VideoLAN Client) for a long time. It sounds great "on paper" and I've heard a lot of people rave on it. Unfortunately I've never gotten it to work.
I'm thinking I'm going to try it again soon. I'm not unsatisfied with Totem or with mplayer, but I keep hearing good things about vlc, so I want to give it another shot. If I have trouble, maybe I'll ask a question here on AB.
In the meantime, do you hear this often ("I couldn't get it to work...") and is there something that n00bs like me tend to miss?
