Although soldiers are usually required to march together in step, they must break their march crossing a bridge. Explain the possible danger of crossing a rickety bridge without taking this precaution.

    The original myth with this was that soldiers could somehow march in exact unison, reaching a bridge's natural resonant frequency and causing it to collapse. Doesn't happen.

    A rickety bridge, however, I wouldn't suggest walking upon with a large group in the first place, whether marching, walking or dancing across.

    • Doesn't happen?? It first happened on the Broughton Suspension bridge in 1831 and Angiers Bridge in 1850. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broughton_Suspension_Bridge
