Over-charging or overheating.
Most rechargeable electronics are smart enough to detect when the battery is full and stop charging. Then again, most such devices are not broken.

thanks jerv...'twas one of the strangest things ive ever seen :/... so how does one dispose of such things?

Ok ,Jerv.Awaiting your email.
@miss:sometimes it screws up the entire cabinet and the electrodes those are connected to the rectifier circuit. You need to know the exact amount of damage that has been done to your cell phone. In the case of my sister's, some liquid from the battery(don't know what exactly it is) got into the cell's circuit and as a result the entire set got defunct.
.
Just switch off the set and for the time being get the battery off the set.I don't wanna scare you but, there are every chances of explosion.Take it to the retailer and see if it can be fixed in their repair work shop.

Sorry about that, eng. I ran into issues with my mail client. Been doing some reconfiguring and I think I got it working again now.

thank you Engineer...will do...i will admit it looked about ready to pop when i was holding it...scary stuff.

Batteries CAN do scary things when they go bad.
They are generally vented well enough that explosions are fairly rare, though not unheard of.
More often, they overheat and damage whatever they are in/on. That includes your hand (if a cellphone) or your lap (for a laptop computer)... or sometimes your house if you happen to have it indoors near anything flammable, like furniture.
I melted the frame on one of my old R/C cars that way once. I yanked the battery pack out, threw in into the parking lot and let it sit there for a few hours. Never blew up, but it left a nice scorch mark on the pavement.
