Need help navigating the gobledygook: I have an HDTV, but a 15 dollar dvd player. What do I REALLY need to watch movies on my HDTV? Are HD dvd players really everything they are cracked up to be? And does a person REALLY need over a $100 dollar cable?

Yes, BluRay players are worth it. You will notice a big difference in picture quality between Blu Ray and DVD.
By the way, the consortium making HD DVD's decided to call it quits, so Blu Ray is the only HD disk on the market now.

And no, you don't need to spend $100 on an HDMI cable. A $20 one will be just fine, as long as it's relatively short (< 3meters).
