During a military funeral, who is the flag handed to if the spouse of the deceased is not living?

    Also, if there is no next-of kin or relative available, an individual can step up and ask to be the one whom the flag is handed to. If this isn't able to occur, the military themselves will have friends of the individual (hopefully) who can step up for the flag and worst-case scenario, a representative of the service division steps in and takes the flag.

    • I've had to present the flag to the funeral director, the Post Commander of the veterans' VFW and to the veterans' neighbor. All because there was no next of kin at the funeral. Depressing as hell.
