Base curve is measured in millimeters.
Eyeglass prescriptions are a bit different: The first number is the spherical refractive error in diopters (negative for nearsighted, positive for farsighted). Spherical errors occur when the optical power of the eye is either too large or too small to focus light on the retina.
The second number is the astigmatism (if no astigmatism, it is usually notated by "DS" or "SPH". The final number is the direction of the astigmatism.
