Birth defects caused by smoking during pregnancy DO NOT affect the babies lungs. They cause small birth weights and immature organs due to premature births.

Lung cancer can be caused by anything that stays in the lungs. Coal mines, smog, dust, baby powder. These particals breakdown the immune system and can allow the body to develop cancer if it is in their genes. That's why smokers for 40 yrs do not get Canc

There is a link between smoking mothers and children with an increased risk of asthma and other respiratory problems, but I think that's more likely in parents who smoke around their children AFTER birth rather than mothers who smoke while pregnant. A fetus' lungs cannot be directly affected by cigarette smoke, as the smoke does not enter the womb.
