I wouldn't say astrology has no bearing at all on relationships. Whether two opposite signs stay together or not depends on how they handle their differences. If they can allow their differences to complement each other, then maybe they'll stay together. If they allow their differences to conflict, the relationship will suffer.
The astrological compatibility between people does tend to get generalised, but on the whole I think it is better if they have one or two things in common to start off with. That's why I tend to favour two signs of the same element (e.g. Pisces and Scorpio - both Water signs). In cases like that they can allow their differences to complement each other whilst enjoying the similar qualities from their mutual Water element.
However, some people (don't ask me why) prefer a partner who is a total opposite. You know, someone who has lots of what the other lacks. For example, an Aries might be attracted to a patient Taurus to make up for the Aries' own lack of patience - that sort of thing. This type of relationship I should imagine would be a bit more difficult to work at.
