I was helping a friend pressure wash the siding on his house several summers ago, when we removed some lattice from the bottom of his porch. There seemed to be an unusual amount of spiders on the first piece, and as we begun to remove more and more, we continued to find lots of spiders on each piece. Eventually, a flashlight revealed a massive 'colony(?)' of spiders under his porch. By my estimation, there had to have been 1000+ adults, and literally hundreds of thousands of tiny, nearly microscopic, babies. Nearly the entire surface area of the underside of the porch was painted with spiders. I think there had to have been something wrong with, or very unusual about, the local ecosystem to have supported the lives of so may insects. I don't know if that constitutes an epidemic or not, but one spider is enough to make me want to run away, so it felt like one to me!
