Not entirely by choice, but my last job (and the job to which I hope and expect to return later this year) required me to join the Teamsters' Union; which is perhaps the most notorious of all of them in regards to illegal activities and ties to organized crime.

Its better than not being in a union, at least you have some protection. Left to the employers you'd be working with little safety considerations and poor renumeration.

That may have been true at one time, steelhamster, but safety regulations are pretty universal now. I very much doubt that the employers would be able to get away with what they used to in this respect now. I am also not so convinced that unions really protect their employees from unfair pay rates anymore. There are many people who are working quite happily in jobs that are traditional union type jobs that are not part of a union. If I am not mistaken, these include auto manufacturing plants that don't even have unions. If they wanted to, these people could unionize. However, they are happy enough with their wages and work conditions to not want the hassle of a union.

Fair wages and working conditions are best set by open competition in a free and fair market. Over a century ago, we passed the Sherman Antitrust Act, to prevent companies from engaging in anti-competitive practices. Labor unions achieve their goals by engaging in practices which are unethical, and which, if practiced by companies, would be very much illegal.
