Poker is a game of skill, with an element of chance. Part of the skill is learning to manage chance. Just as a pass from a quarterback doesn't make it to the receiver all the time--but the quarterback trains and learns how to increase the chances of the ball getting caught, good poker players learn to increase the chances that they will make good reads, know if they have the right odds to bet, and know when to fold.

There are way more skills to poker than just reading facial expressions. So much more information can be gotten from a player's betting habits than from their facial expressions. Are your opponents crazy aggressive? Trap them! Are they super tight? Be aggressive! Calculating if you have the right odds on your money is another huge skill, that really isn't that hard to learn.

Learning what your opponents think about you is another important skill. Do they underestimate you? Surprise them! Do they fear you? Bully them!

Plus there are tons of "plays" in poker, just like football. Value betting, check/raising to extract money, check/raising to bluff, check/calling, continuation betting, bluffing, the squeeze play, the stop and go, stealing the blinds, defending the blinds, small ball strategy, defensive betting, giving a free card....etc. The number of these strategies and how they work together is insane.

Most people don't know this, but stealing blinds is like treading water. If you do nothing but steal the blinds, you can't go broke, and it buys enough time to hit a monster hand. You can defend the blinds, too. And it's easy to spot when somebody is stealing blinds. You can counter against the defense, as well.

Anyway. The people that say there's little skill involved are just wrong. There's a reason why the same people win the big tournaments time after time.
