Is there any way to increase my chances of running into a shiny pokemon? ex. a certain pokemon's ability

the best way is to chain pokemon using the pokeradar:

this is a guide to help you learn how.

Firstly you will need the Pokéradar for the Pokétch, youll get this after the Elite Four ..

Try to find a large patch of grass where the pokémon that you want inhabits. Now walk around untill you battle the first one (chain#1). Now, after you defeated or captured it, use your Pokéradar and watch the grass, The further away the shaking section of grass is, the more likely it is of the same type, also note how it shakes, as this will also improve your chances of a higher chain if you match that thoughout the chaining process.

once you get to a chain of about 40, you should start looking for patches of grass that twinkle, this indicates a shiny Pokémon. Also note, a chain any higher than 40 will not yeald any greater chances of finding a shiny Pokémon, so you should only chain higher if you want bragging rights.

Use Repels to prevent other pokemon from breaking the chain
Dont battle at the edge/corner of a patch of grass

Also, use syncronise to get the same ability as the user
