It mostly depends on where you live. In the northeast it religion has a lesser effect than in the south (US speaking) but in China religion has almost zero effect on politics and is even beaten down brutally. In China religion is illegal unless your religion is the Communist party, the CCP and you are shipped off to reeducation camps and tortured for your beliefs.
In the US religion is put up on pedestals depending on your religion and seen is something either glorious or villainous depending on which branch of the tree you happen to hang your cross or star or moon from.
