Go for a PC. PCs are cheaper and they can do all that you need them for. You don't need a Mac to write essays and papers. PCs are more common and the majority of businesses use PCs. Macs are mostly used in the media or graphic design industry where they are used to their full potential.

I'm a Mac user and based on my experience, there are certain files that I cannot open such as .rar files (archive files people use to send multiple files in one) or windows media files that you wont be able to see. Of course there is a way to install windows in a Mac. But if all you're going to be doing is writing essays and surfing the web, you don't need a Mac.
