I agree with all the other answers to this question with one addition. Those with Peter in Acts 2 asked this very question. "What must we do to be saved?" Peter answered in Acts 2:38, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the give of the Holy Spirit."

Don't confuse baptism with a legalistic work. Paul preached very harshly against legalistic adherence to a law of works in Romans yet assumed all those listening had been baptized in Romans 6:4-5.

Baptism is a distinctive act of obedience and submission to God. You can't baptize yourself. It's saying that you can't save yourself and ony by participating in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus can you be saved (again, Romans 6:4-5).

Jesus commanded it in Mark 16:16 and Matthew 28:18-20. Peter discussed it's significance in 1 Peter 3:21 and commanded those hearing the first gospel sermon to submit themselves to the Savior they had killed in this way. The book of Acts is filled with examples of conversions and baptism is an important aspect of those stories.

Baptism doesn't conflict with the previous comments. Belief, repentance, and confession are all part of the process as described in numerous verses already mentioned. Let's just not forget our act of faithful obedience that gratefully accepts the gift God has offered. After all, we're "saved by grace THROUGH faith" (Ephesians 2:8).

After such a humble statement to our savior, Paul goes on to say in Romans 6 that we then are a new person and the old person has died. We are BORN AGAIN.

    • Must accept Jesus as your Saviour--baptism is the outward showing that you have done this.
