Manuals allow you to control basically the entire vehicle. You make all of the decisions regarding the powertrain and no computer will overule you and downshift, or not shift up, etc. I have a manual and an auto. I cannot count the amount of times the automatic has played with my mind. Going 130km/h up a gentle incline on a highway, it stayed in 3rd gear and was just wasting my gas. I had to take my foot completely off the gasto get it to shift up.

If you are good with a stick, you can shift in less than a second - comparable to an automatic.
This is in addition to having the advantage of controlling the amount of torque going to the wheeels and being able to use engine braking more efficiently.

There is also the fuel economy aspect - racers dont like to refuel often, so saving hundreds of pounds by having a manual transmission can mean they can go longer between fill ups.
