Speaking purely from my own experience and what I've been told: Stay away from windows, turn off the computer, don't use the phone or electrical appliances, don't take a bath or shower or use the sink. Don't put anything with an antenna pointing out a window. It's a good idea to have surge protectors on any electrical equipment, too. If your area has a lot of thunderstorms, the library probably has a list of the safety precautions.
