When same-sex couples marry, does one take the surname of the other?

    This isn't something that's dictated by law in most places for any married couple. It would be up to the partners whether to keep their own last names, take one or the other, or to hyphenate, just as for heterosexual marriages.

    • I'd agree that there is no law requiring it. My wife kept her "maiden name" because she has a thriving business and was only known to clients by her maiden name. It is, however, an old custom which is very hard to break, and letters to both of us from my grandparents, aunts, and uncles still come addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. MyLastName" (as opposed to HerLastName). You wouldn't believe the comments we get with a surname like MyLastName. At least its better than Git.
