In reference to Baptist believers, although referred to as "Protestant", Baptist have never protested any groups of faith, we only advocate and contend for our own beliefs. Ephesians 4:5; II Timothy 3:16-17

Those who protested and separated from the Catholic church are Lutheran, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist and their off-spring. Baptist stand with Jude, verses 3-4.

We have not always been known by this name. We were called the Way, Disciples or Anabapitst. We were first called Christians at Antioch. Acts 11:26

The Roman Catholic Church was founded in 590 A.D. by Gregory the Great and headed by the Pope. Baptist was founded by Christ in 32 A.D. and headed by Christ. Colossians 1:18

    Edit:

1520 Martin Luther left the Roman Church and established the Lutheran Church.

1534 King Henry VIII left the Roman Catholic Church and established the Episcopal Church.

1536 John Calvin and John Know left the Roman Catholic Church and established the Presbyterian
    Church.

1600 Robert Brown left the Episcopal Church and established the Congregational Church.

1740 John Wesley left the Episcopal Church and established the Methodist Church.

1810 Alexander Campbell left the Presbyterian Church and established the Disciples of Christ.

1816 William Miller left the Baptist Church and established the Adventist Church.

1827 Elder George Faster left the Baptist Church and established the Primitive Baptist.

1830 Joseph Smith and Brigham Young left the Baptist Church and established the Mormon Church
    and Latter Day Saints Church.

1849 Joseph Bates left the Adventist Church and established the 7th Day Adventist Church.

1878 Mary Eddy Baker established the Christian Science Church.

1897 Howard Hopple left the Methodist Church and established the Sanctified Church.

1895 C.H. Mason left the Baptist Church and established the Holiness Movement. Known by some
    as the Church of God.

There's more but this gives some idea as to who and when.

    • sorry but the Catholic church was founded by Jesus when he named Peter the first Pope. Matthew 16:18. The Baptist church was organized in the 1600's in protest against Rome.

    • daisymae19 your information is incorrect. Jesus never named Peter Pope. The rock on which Jesus said he would build his church was Peter's confession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. The verse you noted was taken out of context; read Matthew 16:13-18. Jesus was not Catholic and neither was Peter. They were Jewish. The Baptist never needed to protest against the Roman Catholic Church because they were never a part of it. I'll add information to my answer that shows who did separate from the Catholic Church and when. And, also the splits within the splits.

    • no annony your information, while it is what the SB teaches, is incorrect when you actually do some research on your own using sources other then fundamentalist protestant sources..but your answer shows that while the SB claims to be bible literal when the literal words do not agree with the claim they are making they don't accept the literal words of the bible. Thanks for illustrating that again. (from someone who was raised SB and has deacons and preachers back to the early 1700's in the direct line..so post away...I have already found the sources that show the *problems* with that info...

    • daisymae19 am I correct in thinking that SB means Southern Baptist? I'm Missionary Baptist and would be interested in knowing those sources if you would be willing to share them.
