Ronald Reagan was a bad president, who promulgated bad policies and appointed bad people -- under Reagan, we sent the deficit skyrocketing, growing faster in real dollars than under any other president, including the current one. We cut social spending to the bone, creating the homeless problem by turning hundreds of thousands of mentally ill people out on the streets. We appointed Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court. We cut school funding, trying to classify ketchup as a vegetable. We banned the Beach Boys as attracting the wrong sort of crowd. We traded arms, money, drugs, and hostages between Iran and the Nicaraguan rebels. More appointed officials were indicted and convicted of crimes than under any other president. We gave chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein. We claimed that trees cause most pollution.

He catastrophically lowered taxes in 1981, creating debt so bad he raised taxes each of the next six years and still didn't make up for it. And while he streamlined the complex and exemption-riddled income tax, his changes created the largest-ever shift of tax burden from the wealthy to the middle-class and working poor.

    • Ronald Reagan really is a fucking douche.

To those of you who hold this view, I must respectfully say fuck you. I secretly wept on the stairs the night Ronald Reagan was elected President, because I understood that stupid and mean people really did get their way in the world, even when you grew up. He was a bad actor, an informer during the blacklisting years in Hollywood, and finally a front man for a coalition of Texas oilmen, fundamentalist dingbats, and right-wing psychotics out of Dr. Strangelove. He brought greed, callousness, bigotry, and chauvanism back into style at home and supported torturers and death squads abroad. His legacy includes the embezzlement of almost all the country's wealth by 1% of its citizens, the scapegoating of the poor and black, schizophrenics turned out on the streets, the AIDS epidemic, the War on Drugs, acid rain, Iran-Contra, and over two hundred dead United States Marines. He believed in Armageddon and astrology and didn't know the difference between reality and things that happened in movies. He was the triumph of image over truth. He was a fool, a liar, and a traitor to his country. He made me ashamed to be an American. And if there were any justice in this world, his head would be placed atop a bamboo stake somewhere in public for birds to pick at, his Presidential Library would contain nothing but boys' adventure books and bad cowboy movies, and the only things named after him would be shopping malls and Potter's Fields. Let him rot, let his name never be spoken again, and let the earth where he is buried be seeded with salt.

    • Well. There you go again. Shortsightedness and tunnel vision without any ability to see the whole picture. He inherited a presidency that was woefully horrible in identifying what was wrong economically in this country. The peanut farmer was graceful enough and it was what this country needed after Vietnam, Watergate, racial tensions, eco
nomy, foreign affairs, middle east turmoil etc.it was reagan who used our economic might to bring down the soviet union, played poker with them knowing full well there would be no star wars but the soviets didn't know that. Clinton was president when the walls cametumbling down as a result of reagans foreign policy. Because of reagans economic policies, we had the longest economic recovery in the history of the U.S. Sure he and his administration made some blunders, but the world became a safer place because of him. you do gooders(a reagan saying) still cannot grapple with the truth about reagan. And that is ok. You want instant economic recovery and the way the democrats spend everythingit required patience and pain and a re-emohasis on family values and the order of things the way they are supposed to be. I for one know that he is a better president dead than anyone of the ones that came after he left office. God bless what that man did for this country and the world.
