I think the underlying source of introversion for people is lack of self-confidence and being overly self-conscious about themselves. It is easy for people to keep to themselves if they do not want to expose/reveal their true personality to people in fear of rejection or lack of acceptance. So, this is the first and probably most difficult step towards becoming a more extroverted person: you have to feel comfortable being yourself around other people. :) Don't be unafraid of who you are; don't be afraid of what people will think because all it comes down to is whether or not you're happy with yourself. If they aren't open-minded to how unique we all are as individuals, then they are the ones who are at a loss.

More concretely, generally I would suggest just to make yourself available to other people. Share your time and love with people you care about and people will naturally gravitate to you. Extrovertedness doesn't necessarily have to be shown through participating in more activities, than being more open and honest to people. :)
