Is there a law regarding how many hours a trucker can drive each day?

    To expand a little on the answer given, the 8 day 70 hour clock is for operations that are 24/7 businesses, there is also a 7 day 60 hour restriction for companies that do not operate arond the clock. In addition there are allowances for a 2 hour extension in one service period that allows for inclimate weather or other instances where a driver has been delayed through no fault of there own that will still allow them to make it home without penalty or shutdown provided they have left from and are returning to the same base of operations. The regulations are drawn up by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and placed into law by the Congress. Enforcement of the laws is left up to the various State, County and local municipalities with the State having ultimate jurisdiction to accept or modify Federal regulations within a 3 year period of them being passed into law. Generally states accept them as written with the right to add to them for their own particular situations.One last note, the most recent changes in transportation regs is the first time they have been amended since 1939. Not many things from the Ferderal government stay unchanged for that length of time.

    • Good answer. To add without being redundant:
      New Hours of Service Regulations went into effect Oct 2005, and were ammended Jan, 06. They are still under dispute.
