Do cats purr around other cats, or just around humans?

    Purring is apparently a cat's way of requesting attention. Mother cats do it to apparently calm their kittens, and kittens do it while nursing.

    But even a severely injured cat will sometimes purr, and vets have heard cats purr right up to the moment of death. In fact, I saw it happen to one of our cats, years ago, who got hit by a car. The theory is that this is a desparate plea for attention, although there's no definitive proof of that.
