Well, you do need to start with an apple tree or, preferably, at least two trees. Apple trees do not self-pollinate, so a source of pollen is required for the trees to fruit. If there are apple trees in the vicinity of your home and the bees are busy, you might be able to get away with a single tree. The choice of cultivar or variety of apple tree is important, because some do not produce much pollen and some are intended for commercial production. These are most commonly found in commercial orchards. There are several dwarf varieties that are quite suitable for growing in your yard at home. Apple trees also need to be carefully pruned to encourage the growth of quality fruit. Any apple tree you can buy is grafted onto hardy rootstock.

Apples are a very common commercial crop and a great deal of information is available from agricultural agencies. I haved used the resources and publications from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food to obtain information on growing fruit in the past and with some success. They do have a bias towards commercial production, but there is a great deal of valuable information for small-scale gardeners, as well. Information on apples can be found at http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/hort/apples.html . Their publication, "Fruit Trees in the Home Garden" (order #98-011), is oriented towards small-scale gardeners (http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/98-011.htm).

Growing your own fruit can be very rewarding, provided you beat the squirrels and the birds to the crop. This is not as much of a problem with apples as it is with smaller fruits.

    • Nice answer. I have read that crab apples are a good source for pollination but you have to be committed in cleaning up debris and dropped crab apples or you could get infested with pest such as plum curculio.
