Some vaccines have contained the preservative Thimerosal (partly ethyl mercury) since the 1930s FDA report. It has been widely speculated that this mercury-based preservative can trigger autism in children who are already genetically predisposed to it; however, medical evidence in recent studies has shown no evidence supporting any such link

    • As a side note I think that it should be mentioned that low levels of ethyl mercury aren't toxic. It's methyl mercury that's a problem. Thimerosal didn't have methyl mercury in it.
      .
Also, Thimerosal no longer contains ethyl mercury, as of 1995, because there was concern that parents wouldn't immunize their kids because they were afraid of the mercury that they didn't need to be afraid of.
