It is not abnormal for mosses and lichens to grow on the trunks of trees. Lichens require sunlight, while mosses prefer the shade. Trees that are growing in damp shady areas, those that are nearing the end of their natural life, or unhealthy trees are the most susceptible to these parasitic growths. The treatment depends on the needs of the plants growing on your tree. Still, if the tree is old or sick, it might be time to replace it.

Moss that grows in shady and/or damp areas can be controlled by ensuring more sunlight reaches the trunk to dry it out. This could be done by pruning the tree or removing other plants that block sunlight from reaching the trunk. However, to control the growth of moss on one tree might require the removal of another tree. The prevailing weather conditions also play a major role. Moss is much more common on the west coast of Canada, for example, which receives more rainfall and fewer hours of sunlight than where I live in central Canada. If the tree is shaded by a building or other trees, it may simply be impossible to prevent the growth of mosses.

Some mosses can be controlled through chemical controls, but their success depends on the type of moss, the health of the tree, and the environment the tree lives in. Many prefer not to use chemical herbicides.

Lichens can be controlled by ensuring the tree is vigourous. A healthy tree will provide more shade for its own trunk, which will limit the growth of lichens.
