  • Hey, good question. I'm guessing California is up there. I'd also guess that Michigan, New York, Nevada and Florida are up there too. I'd guess California and New York tax the highest. I know Alaska has the lowest taxes.

I think that when it comes to why these states are in the red, it's very simple. They spend far more than they collect. Social programs are all well and good, unless you can't afford them.

    • According to The Tax Foundation, the citizens of the following states, in order, are the highest total taxed...all "Blue" Democrat and, I suspect, all in dire financial trouble:

Connecticut, where they worked until May 8, 2008...and where, until then, their paychecks/incomes, on average, went to the governments! Then, right behind,

      New Jersey
      New York
      California
      Washington
      Massachusetts
      Maryland
      Minnesota

      Montana
      West Virginia
      Alabama
      Kentucky

    • Florida's rank really surprises me, since we have no state income tax and our sales tax is as low as 6.5%, depending on the local jurisdiction, which can take it to 7%. Our property taxes are more than reasonable, as well. We DO tax "snowbirds", however, with fairly high rental taxes, as much as 18%, I've heard, but these are often "avoided" by renting directly with the owner "under the table". The Legislative bodies, and the Governor, are all Republican...and are always making efforts to lower taxes...of course! :-)

    • I just rated your answer...but I thought I did so before. Maybe I held off until I pulled up the above data. Oh, well, "slapped" with an admonishment...AGAIN! How can I not rate anyone who answers my questions, damn it! The AB computer doesn't give a s..t! :-)
