Several baths a day with salt in the water. Make sure s/he drinks plenty of water, too, and try unsweetened cranberry juice, as well as acidophilus several times a day.

Yes, it's a good idea to check in with your pediatrician, but most will tell you to try some things at home and keep an eye out for danger signs like high fever, lethargy, etc. If they have you come in for every little thing, then they're either not very busy, or they are not good at triage (which is bad news when your child actually DOES need emergency treatment). If our ped summoned us in for this on the first call, I'd shop for a new one.

Every single bump, bruise, and sniffle does not require an emergency trip to the doctor with lights and sirens. You are smart to be thinking about health maintenance at home instead of needing Dr. Nanny to spoonfeed you everything, every time. Good for you!
