Are you saying it's ok to underpay workers?
by Yeux on April 9th, 2007
No, pay minimum wage.
by unknown on April 9th, 2007
Who's going to get that minimum wage, citizens who would pay taxes to support illegals who suck off welfare? Or illegals who would thumb their noses at this country and use the proceeds to bring more here to demolish this country?
by Capt. Jack Sparrow GALCIY on April 10th, 2007
Who can live off minimum wage? The illegals do not. Many in my area work jobs off the records and their wives/girlfriends/families collect government benefits. I know there are legal citizens that abuse the system also, but when you have a fake identity it is easier to cheat the system. Also how many of these employers hire white people? You say its because we as legals do not WANT to work the jobs, I have lived first hand the discrimination of being WHITE when they employer wanted to hire cheap illegals. If there were no illegals, the jobs would be done... saying that no one would do them is ludicrous. The jobs were done before this epidemic. Even I have washed dishes and done housekeeping to make ends meet. Anyway I am fairly ignorant on this subject, I just wanted to add that.

Samuel911 I want to make a distinction, I'm ALL FOR Immigration, it's what this country is founded on! I just don't like how this country is going to hell because of it drowning in ILLEGALS!
by Capt. Jack Sparrow GALCIY on May 19th, 2007
Realistically, NOT LIKELY. The actual cost to consumers would be minimal because the harvesting of fruit/veggies is a very small percentage of the cost to produce, distribute, pkg, etc.. Also alot of our produce comes from Central/South America.
There are still many legal residents (green cards, work permits, etc) with few skills, little English available to do house cleaning, car washing, etc.
Construction workers would finally get paid what they should before illegals undercut their wages.
by Scifisuz on July 13th, 2007
Plenty of LEGAL citizens work on farms, too. I hardly think the store shelves would be totally empty, or even noticeably impacted. And god forbid we have to rely on small, LOCAL farming for our produce or even worse - GROW our own vegetables!
by Anonymous on July 17th, 2007
Anon. You can buy from local farms --but most of them use immigrant workers too. You CAN grown your own vegetables if you want to avoid encouraging immigration. So why aren't you?
by JaneAllen on August 4th, 2008
JA - clarification - we are only talking about ILLEGAL immigrants with this question, NOT legal immigrants, legal residents, etc.
by Scifisuz on August 6th, 2008
Illegals should be placed on some sort of fast-track naturalization process or we should have a Temporary Workers card. Ac\Griculture, meatpacking, restaurants use these workers because they actually work unlike many native born American citizens who are too good for the work, or who are afraid of the sun.

Owning a farm, working on many others, knowing workers and farmers, I can tell you that we would leave fields unharvested if it weren;t for these dedicated workers.
.
You want to talk about low pay? OK, raise it. Bt let us keep our workers. We need them.
by MaineMoody on August 6th, 2008
How about all the legal residents from the same countries as illegals... who are being priced out by illegals willing to undercut their pay & afraid to demand that labor laws be obeyed? How about legal immigrants who are already here get those jobs?
Send the illegals home.
by Scifisuz on August 8th, 2008
If jobs are left unfilled can you say that there are legal residents who are being forced out by illegal aliens?
by JaneAllen on August 13th, 2008
JaneAllen: I DO grow a lot of my own vegetables, thankyouverymuch. Not because I want to "avoid encouraging immigration", but because it's cheaper and they taste better.
by Anonymous on August 14th, 2008
Well more power to you then Anonymous
by Capt. Jack Sparrow GALCIY on August 14th, 2008
JA: When offered a fair wage, these jobs get filled no problem. I'd talk to you about supply and demand and fair wages that should be offered to workers.
by Scifisuz on August 21st, 2008
Define fair wage
by MaineMoody on August 22nd, 2008
definition of fair wage: The salary amount (benefit amount) that needs to be offered by the employer to attract qualified legal employees.
by Scifisuz on August 27th, 2008
There would in fact be plenty of food on the shelves and stored, in the bread basket 99% of farming is mechanized, no illegals needed or used. Just a few Americans with a strong back and a good work ethic can produce enough grain to feed a nation.
