Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a windows XP, that is generally good. I watch a lot of videos on YouTube, but now, anything I watch is really choppy. I think it may have been due to the memory on my computer, but I have 10 gb of memory left on it and don't know the problem.

    Memory = RAM

You wouldn't have 10 Gb of Ram on a PC these days.

Your 10 Gb refers to hard disk space.

The videos may be choppy for the following reasons:

    1) Slow internet connection.

    2) Your hard disk is extremely fragmented and as the video is being downloaded into your hard drive your computer is searching for places to put the different parts of the file.
    > This is unlikely, but run a disk defrag to be sure.

    3) Your computer is overloaded and you are running too many programs in the background. This takes up RAM not hard disk space.

    4) YouTube is encountering problems.

Try to let the whole video download in the background (press mute) and come back to it. Once it has downloaded, play it again and if it is still jerky the chances are it is a memory (RAM) issue. #3

    • sorry I meant Hard Drive. I always mis-say those two. The only program I have open is Firefox, with only AB and Youtube running. I've had this problem for a few days now, and it only started doing this recently. I have DSL, and it usually goes really good. The video loads entirely before I watch it, so I son't know why it would do this. And I know I have between 300-600 ram on the computer, so I don't think there would be a problem with that. And, I had 5gb of Hard Drive space, then I deleted a bunch of stuff, and got it back to the space it normally has.

    • That would make sense, since my computer was on a lot lately. I'll restart it and see. thanks.

    • You might also want to archive any photos and videos you don't need to free up some memory & space.

    • you are aware that many processes can be running invisibly even if you only have a browser open?

      try opening the taskmanager
      ctrl+alt+Delete
look in the cpu column to see what is hogging processor time anf the mem usage column to see what's using up your ram memory
you might also allocate more space to virtual memory
that's right click my computer>click properties>click advanced tab>click settings button under preformance>click advanced tab> click change button under virtual memory>adjust the amount of memory and ok it you may have to restart for changes to take effect

and finally, it's time for an upgrade, 500 to 600 mb of ram is a joke now a days.
youtube and other sites are constantly implementing changes that require more ram to see the same thing in a new media type
