Is schooling a hindrance to education? Is formal education just a form of subtle indoctrination, or is it possible to sit through years of lecturing and still consider your opinion to truly be the product of your own reason?

The product of your own reason? Aristotle and Descartes tried that...most of their theories have been debunked.

The whole point of being educated is realizing that no 1 person can know everything on their own - any such claim would arrogance, not brilliance. Thus the need for research and citations; you can't just consult "the book of nature" anymore and be considered a visionary.
