TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. It depends entirely on what has made your hemoglobin low enough to be diagnosed with anemia. Just EATING something might do absolutely NOTHING to help with your anemia.

Don't play around with pills or anything but what your/a doctor tells you to take. Anemia can kill you if it is not treated properly. There are over 400 types of anemia!

We are not doctors and have no idea what caused your anemia, what type you have or how severe it is. Iron pills and/or food alone is NOT the cure for most anemias!

    Edit- Just to be clear:

Anemias of a nutritional lack or cause come from a deficiency of some nutrient, mainly iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid. But they can also result from a deficiency of other nutrients. These can be, among MANY: vitamins B2, B, C, A, D, E, and K, as well as the minerals zinc, copper and calcium. It can also be a lack of protein. The lack of certain enzymes can also cause anemia. As can blood loss due to injury or disease. Other common causes of anemia, which of course we have no idea if you have or do not have include diseases that produce a decreased development of your red blood cells (which transports hemoglobin so you get enough oxygen to your heart, brain and vital organs) and also a decrease in erythrocytes. It can also be due to a destruction of RBCs due to disease.

It can be SO many things. And each needs to be treated differently. Some aggressively in a hospital, some aggressively at home, and some are not as severe, but still need the RIGHT kind of treatment.

So please ask or go back to see your doctor if you are in the dark on this. Good luck!

    • I think you talk sense. I answered on the assumption that if someone knew they had anemia that they'd already seen a health professional. I'm not sure how you'd know otherwise.

    • that's what I was thinking, too. Apparently s/he was diagnosed and the doctor wasn't alarmed enough to implement a strict set of instructions about it. Usually doctors err on the side of overreacting, lest they be sued, so it's probably safe to assume that this person is not in immediate peril. If it were aplastic anemia or something like that, s/he wouldn't have left the office without a whole lot more information than the word "anemia."

    • Many people don't remember what they were told as far as what to take, what to eat, or anything. Some don't hear what the doctor is saying or don't understand it well. And as a result, many people die each year due to anemia who do not have to die.

    • yes I agree. it does seem remiss of a the doc to not offer the most minimal of remedial advice.

    • We don't know WHAT the doctor said or did not say, which is why we cannot assume anything except that this person needs to call or go see them again so they understand what they have and exactly how to treat it. If they are older or not medically very "smart" they could have been told to do all kinds of things and forgotten it or misunderstood. I don't assume anything with medical issues on here or anywhere unless I can read the chart or the diagnosis or know the lab tests. Assuming anything on AB is dangerous when it comes especially to medical issues and any "advice" we might give someone.

    • perhaps there shouldn't be a medical section then braveheart? A page saying 'we're not experts go see your doctor' would be more suitable. I don't wholly disagree with you, you offer sound advice and you make a good point about this but surely this is the nature of such a website. People won't give full information and other people will presume to fill it in for them before relating an answer from their own experience.

    • Maybe so. That is up to the staff. All I know for a fact is what I stated and anyone (including a doctor) who even tries to advise pills or foods for someone with this person's obviously poor grasp on what they have or even what kind of anemia it is, is not doing them a favor and could be hurting them badly. I feel we have an obligation to either not answer, or in cases like this, to refer them back to a professional who does know (or can find out) the exact diagnosis, and prescribe the correct diet and/or medications. I don't want hurting someone else on my conscience just to answer a question.

    • oh, for crap's sake, I SPECIFICALLY included a disclaimer that she should find out from the doctor what exactly she has before assuming it's iron-deficiency anemia. way to rate it down for answering the question IN ADDITION TO saying to ask the doctor. I'm sure you didn't bother reading to that point. It didn't start with "ALL HAIL WESTERN MEDICINE" so of course it had to be rated down for that aggregious omission. @@

    • you didn't need to add a disclaimer, there is one at the foot of every page of this website. It is up to all parties to use the site responsibly I think. I didn't make a disclaimer but then I also didn't say you - must - do as I say. I can understand Braveheart feeling strongly about this. I appreciate that medical condtions can seem inoccuous and be life threatening. I seriously think that if he feels this is such a serious issue he should be discussing it with the staff, though I think they'd say the same as me - there's a disclaimer at the foot of the page, recommending the use of common sense when taking advice from other members.

    • And some people don't read the disclaimer - I would bet sure most dont- and that would not help my conscience any if I found out that medical advice I gave caused someone to die or become very ill. Do as you wish.

    • then what makes you think you are anemic, artist?

      Jessicax23

      by Jessicax23 on March 22nd, 2007

    • @artistinagony: If you know you have anemia, you are risking your health badly if you do not treat it right. Go to an Emergency Room if you have to. Can you afford to die? You could if you do have severe anemia or a sub type and do not treat it! Think about that.

@Jessicax23 Good question! Maybe some good old fashioned GERITOL is what we should have all said, instead of delving into this and getting into a disagreement. I swear, some of these people present like they are pregnant, or dying or might be, and we are supposed to guess what it is or what to do about it. That's why I tend to agree with you that medical questions on a place like this unless they just want definitions, which they can get themselves online, is maybe a waste of time and we could be way off the mark on any of that stuff when people are guessing about what they have or for whatever reason cannot or will not follow up with the doctor, free clinic, PParenthood, or a hospital ER.
