Generally the ingredients for in-office and in-home dental whitening differ only in the concentration of peroxide used. Most in-office systems use 15-35% hydrogen peroxide gels or carbamide peroxide. These are sometimes augmented with an extremely bright light to aid in bleaching.

In-home systems typically use 10-20% carbamide gel to accomplish the bleaching.

Because of the increased concentration of peroxide in the in-office treatments, the soft tissues of the mouth are generally protected from the peroxide by a physical barrier to avoid injury.
