What should I do about this sidewalk? (see picture below)

    My boyfriend and I just moved into his house that has been rented out for the past four years. There's a sidewalk that goes around the house and is terribly crooked. It angles down towards the house, which raises concerns about water running towards the foundation.

    I've considered taking a sledgehammer to it, leveling the ground and planting some flowers and herbs where the sidewalk used to be.

    Has anyone ever demolished a sidewalk before? Is it safe to smash this sidewalk to bits or is there a better way to get rid of it?
