Many year ago the fisherman discovered how to catch more fish and were unable to sell there extra fish and wanted to week end off. It just so happened that the fisherman's wife was the mistress of the on going pope. So she held back her favours to the pope until he made it a rule for all those in his kingdom eat fish on Friday. So it is written. This question is about faith and belief not fact or imperial thinking and needs no close examination. Sort of like religion. Its all about make believe.

    • This answer has some validity in that fish were abundant and free for anyone to catch and eat during these days. However in reference to the Christian reasoning, please read this article posted with specific bible references: http://www.examiner.com/motherhood-in-charleston/the-beginnings-of-fish-on-fridays-dispelling-the-myths There is also a great recipe in a related article called Fish on Fridays remix recipe. I even took pictures be prepared you will get hungry!

    • it's not like you had to eat fish on friday. you could eat anything that wasn't considered meat. the reason was twofold. 1st to acknowledge the fact that Jesus Christ was cruxified for our sins and we gave up eating meat on every friday and Christmas Eve. 2nd. when this was put into Canon one of the main reasons was that the world as it was known to be at the time consisted of many countries that boarded the sea and it was to benefit the economy of these countries. vatican 2 changed to non meat days only during Lent and people over 65 and the ill were excluded from even this small sacrifice. i'm 65 and have severe COPD and don't eat meat on fridays during Lent. the purpose of Lent is to sacrifice for Jesus giving His life for all people so that sin may be forgiven. it also is a time for reflection on the sins we have committed. it also is a time to help those less fortunate than others of some act of mercy. Lent is 40 days long because the number 40 is significent in the Bible the jews wandered in the desert for 40 years. Jesus prayed for 40 days and nights without food or water. there were 40 days between His ressurection and Ascension into Heaven and more. it's all in the Bible, read it sometime.

    • First off, I'm both a skeptic and an atheist. I am confused as to how you can accurately claim that you are an "Empirical" thinker when you cannot even spell the word. How can you say you rely on facts when you didn't even bother to check the validity of your answer before posting it? No group has a monopoly on idiocy, but every group, (and person, for that matter) has it's share of bad judgement. By not constantly checking the validity of your own thinking, are you not acting much like those you claim to oppose?
