Actually, A.D. means "anno domini", which is Latin meaning, "in the year of our Lord."

This was originally designed to start when Jesus Christ was born and continue henceforth from there. However, after some time it was realized that it was off 3-4 years, which is why Jesus' birth is now put around 3-4 B.C.

But A.D. is originally intended as the period that He lived and onward.

    • We now use the terms CE and BCE which refer to common era and before the common era

    • Good. I have never understood "common era" - common to what? were other eras uncommon?

    • "Common Era" is just plain daft- we're still counting from an estimated birth of Christ so why does it make a difference? Its silly.

    • Good answer. I'm glad someone had the sence to tell this person that AD is anno domini. Common misconception.
