Yarmulke is the Yiddish name for what could also be referred to as a skullcap in English. The Hebrew term for the same head covering is kippah. Choice of one term over the other may be determined by one's ethnic origins, whether one's family spoke Yiddish or not... Jews with close ties to Israel might be more apt to use the Hebrew term in this day and age. Most Orthodox Jews that I know say "kippah," although I have certainly heard both terms many times. Non-Jews are probably more familiar with "yarmulke" though.
