Another very important preventative, not yet mentioned here, is breastfeeding. Not only does the milk contain antibodies to help fight infections of all sorts, but the way a child nurses at a breast helps keep the tubes in their ears clear and developing properly.
A child who sleeps while sucking on a bottle should at least have their head raised slightly, on your lap or a pillow, to help gravity clear the tubes.
