Question

Help answer this question below.

My 5 year old is not yet fully potty trained. She knows how to go to the bathroom, understands the sensations, but still has accidents. We have tried incentives, talking to her, charts, nothing works. Any ideas?

I agree with the above answer, certainly check with your doctor.

Another factor to consider is just plain stubborness. Some children will simply refuse to do it because they know its getting them lots of attention from you and that you will "take care of the situation" each time it happens.

Is your child in school, or an institution outside of the home? Putting the child in a more "public" environment should change things if its a case of stubborness. She will soon learn to use the bathroom because she is in a more public environment where things are not quite as cozy as they were at home. She probably won't be comfortable having someone other than you or your spouse deal with this issue. It will also cause embarrasment among her peers when she soils her clothes and has to tell an adult about it. I've seen many kids who "almost" have the hang of potty training, and then get complete control of it once they begin to spend extended periods of time away from Mommy and Daddy. Good luck!
