When has America been one people? Never. We are a nation of peoples that act under unity.

The founders didn't believe that we are the world crap when they wrote based off their actions. Non-European groups attempted to assimilate early on. Blacks tried diligently but were rebuffed for their efforts. Eventually a generation came along and said fuck it, we are Black. They need to assimilate is extremely weak now. So after a century of trying we ask why do we need them to validate us? And why should we want to be them based off how they've treated us? We will always be seen as the other because we're an easily identifiable group that stands out no matter what. And that is why it was easier for other European groups to assimilate. If they lost their accent or let go of their cultural distinctiveness then couldn't really discerned from another white person. Non-Europeans Americans are seen as the other.

Removing the hyphens won't change how we treat each other. For people the hyphens mean different things. It means for some they are proud of their ancestral origins. American culture is not homogeneous. Why should they disassociate their ancestral links? What does it mean to be American? Lots of things, but it doesn't mean we all think the same. However it does mean we are to unify despite the differences. Our differences are what make us strong as a nation. Pretending them we don't have them won't make these problems go away. If we can learn to respect with another then that would be a good starting point.
