Why do people have kids when they know they can't afford them?

    Lots of reasons.

    -Too lazy to use a method of birth control.
    -They're on welfare so they don't need to be able to afford the kid(s).
    -Cause they think they have so much love to give, it will be enough to support a little baby (without giving thought to the fact that they grow up and also need more than love to keep them fed and warm).

    Those are a few (cynical) thoughts that come to mind.
