Actually, Christopher W has only given a partial picture of what is going with the Amiga. Actually the Amiga gained its most prominent success in continental Europe, though even that was moderate. True, the Amiga appears to not even be a blip on todays computer market radar, though many companies have thought to bring it back in one form or another. The Amiga intellectual property rights have been passed around to a half dozen different companies (now owned by Gateway) since Commodore went under, but none of the owners have done anything with it.

However, the Amiga corpse refuses to be buried. Development of Amiga products has never stopped, including the Amiga OS as Christopher W has stated. Most products are developed by European companies. Like the Mac, Amigas have adopted the PowerPC processor as its primary engine. Old Amiga systems can be updraded with G3/G4 accerators. Two recent developments have emerged to take the Amiga out of the realm of merely G3/G4 accelerated Motorolla 68K systems to true PowerPC systems: AmigaOne and Pegasos/Morphos.

The AmigaOne is a general specification for designing PPC Amiga systems, created by Amiga, Inc. (www.amiga.com) the company currently captaining the development of the Amiga world and developer of Amiga OS. AmigaOne specification includes native PPC Amigas and development of accelerators for older 68k systems. The focus of AmigaOne is to maintain compatiblity with Amiga OS, while providing a strategy for future innovation and development with the hardware. Motherboards, systems, and other products based on this specifcation are already in production (www.eyetech.co.uk).

The Pegasos platform (www.pegasosppc.com) and its native operating system MorphOS (www.morphos.net) was created my Genesi (www.genesi.lu). Instead of me explaining what is going on with this, read a more qualified opinion than mine, John C. Dvorak from PC Magazine (http://www.genesi.lu/press_20040314.php).

    • The MorphOS link is outdated, new one is www.morphosppc.com
