Which degree program -- that doesn't lead to a career in academia, like Physics -- is considered the most difficult?

    Sorry for not directly answering this question, but this question displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the way higher education works. EVERY degree program can lead to a career in academia. The very nature of college breeds academics. In other words, the institution of higher learning perpepuates itself by creating more people that can fit into that very same system. No matter how "real world" practical the information in your classes appear to be, you are still getting the basics on how to be an academic in your degree program. Whether you choose to use that information for a career in academia or something else is your choice.
