Adult beggars, alone...I'll give a few rupees...depending upon the circumstances if my intuition says it's OK.

For groups of children, make sure you have a pocket of paise coins to toss and scatter as bait to get you out of a crowd pronto. The paise coins are practically worthless to the average tourist but will still help some poor kid find a bite to eat.

Watch out for the religious beggars who want to wrap a holy thread on your arm or some other such thing. Walk briskly away without making eye contact.

    • Are these beggars from the poorest underclass of India which they call the untouchables?

    • By and large, they are. Regardless of caste, I err in favor of compassionate action.

    • To err is to stray away from something,or to sin, does this mean you treat the untouchables without compassion?

    • Schonberg...sorry for the delay. I've been on hiatus from Answerbag.
I treat untouchables, dalits with compassion. I don't know why I wouldn't do so. Again, I act (as if) the begging is legit.
